One of the key challenges our schools face today is how to improve the use of IT in education so that our schools and learners benefit from the advances in technology.
With the rapid rise in Social Media such as Twitter and the ubiquitous nature of mobile applications the world of work is seeing a far greater dependency on IT.
High school students are already very familiar with using social media such as Twitter and Facebook, however many schools and education as a whole see IT as a separate subject rather than a supporting platform for all subjects.
If we are to prepare the students for the world of work then IT in education needs to be a key element of every subject.
A number of schools have been experimenting with using Twitter in the classroom in order to engage with the students in a familiar environment and so embrace the development of IT in education. Many of the reported benefits included increased engagement, increased participation, concise writing due to the need to keep within the 140 character limit, learning about digital citizenship and social literacy.
However, there are downsides to using Twitter in the classroom as part of using IT in Education and they include security, ability to capture the learning, working with large numbers of students and the inability to handle a wide range of digital media such as video, documents, spreadsheets, presentations etc.
E4A has developed in new class/group based learning platform called ClassBubbles which can deliver any content and so addresses the challenge of making IT part of the delivery of education in the classroom. ClassBubbles combines, the display of content found in presentation software, a task pane needed to make the learning active and so increase retention rates and Twitter like technology to allow the learners and students to respond back in a technology that they are comfortable with.
Classbubbles addresses the issues with using Twitter in the classroom as any digital media can be displayed in the presentation pane, the students can respond back with any digital media, using trending and charting technology and archiving the learning can be captured, summarised and be easily made available to the participants after the event. As each event is separate and controllable by the teacher or facilitator security is not a problem and can therefore be used by learners of all ages.
ClassBubbles addresses the need to develop the use of IT in Education by providing a technology that changes the role of the teacher to that of facilitator where the focus is on helping the students internalise the learning.
